In the field study of the life sciences, data is rarely gathered in comfortable places. For a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology, the curriculum demands navigating dense terrain, wading through coastal wetlands, and enduring long hours over laboratory benches.

For Kurht-daniel Liston, these demands came with an extra layer of complexity. Born with spina bifida—a congenital condition that affected the development of the spine—the physical world is a matrix of architectural and geographical hurdles.
Yet, as the University of San Carlos (USC) convened its 478th Commencement Rites at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel, Liston did not merely receive his diploma; he redefined the parameters of what an inclusive academic ecosystem looks like.

In elite scientific education, field work can inadvertently become a gatekeeper for students with physical disabilities. But Liston’s tenure at the USC Department of Biology deviated from that predictable narrative. His undergraduate experience was less about confronting institutional barriers and more about witnessing a community actively dismantle them.
“I don’t think it’s difficult all the time,” Liston notes, offering an understated perspective on a journey that would overwhelm most. “The department really supported me, and my friends always helped.”
I expect that I am wanted when I enter a room.
That support was systemic. Anchored by a fierce peer network operating on a strict ethos of leaving no one behind, Liston found himself fully integrated into the demanding practical components of his degree. When the physical realities of his condition loomed large, they were met by the collective momentum of his family, his classmates, and a faculty whole contagious enthusiasm for the life sciences kept the focus squarely on intellectual discovery.

Rather than modifying the curriculum to sideline him, the community modified its collective approach to ensure he was central to science.
If institutional support provided the infrastructure, Liston’s internal framework provided the fuel. Academic achievement under the weight of a chronic medical condition requires more than standard resilience—it requires a profound shift in self-perception.
Faced with an environment that rarely builds spaces with congenital spinal condition in mind, Liston developed a radical personal philosophy to navigate the world.
“I expect that I am wanted when I enter a room,” Liston says.
It is a striking thesis statement for a life. By shifting the burden of belonging from a hope to an expectation, Liston effectively flips the script on traditional narratives surrounding disability. He does not ask for permission to occupy space; he assumes his intellect has earned it.

With his bachelor’s degree completed, Liston plans to take a well-deserved break before pursuing a Master’s degree abroad.
