Marine Biology students bolster research through Cephalopod systematics training in Taiwan

The University of San Carlos, through the Department of Marine Biology, sent three B.S. Marine Biology students to the National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, for a specialized research training held from January 10–19, 2026.

USC B.S. Marine Biology students Renz Nico A. Estorba (6th from left), Edwina Grace L. Escobido (3rd from right), and Franco Reece L. Englis (2nd from right) with Dr. Lorenzo C. Halazan (postdoctoral fellow), Hsiu-Chin Lin, Ph.D., and four students from the National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU) Department of Marine Biotechnology and Resources.

Edwina Grace L. Escobido, Renz Nico A. Estorba, and Franco Reece L. Englis were hosted by the Marine Ecology and Evolution Laboratory under the guidance of Dr. Hsiu-Chin Lin, a professor at the Department of Marine Biotechnology and Resources and Chair of the Institute of Marine Ecology and Conservation.

The students were also supported by USC alumnus Dr. Lorenzo C. Halazan, who currently serves as a postdoctoral fellow at NSYSU’s Department of Marine Biotechnology and Resources, further strengthening the ties between the two institutions.

This international exposure is part of the university’s ongoing partnership with NSYSU. By engaging in hands-on learning within an international academic environment, these Carolinians gained expert insights and fresh perspectives that will be pivotal in the completion of their research on Cephalopod systematics.

Through these global collaborations, the USC Department of Biology continues to provide its students with world-class opportunities, ensuring they remain at the forefront of scientific discovery and marine conservation.
