Computer engineering students are overall champions in Visayas-wide tech competition

Computer Engineering students Vincent Abella, Johnfil Initan, Zach Riane Machacon, and Jhury Kevin Lastre were declared as the overall champions in the Solve: Solution Challenge Visayas which took place on May 3–4, 2024, in Iloilo City.

The champion team pose with their adviser (from left) Dr. Philip Virgil B. Astillo, Zach Riane Machacon, Jhury Kevin Lastre, Vincent Abella, and Johnfil Initan.

The Carolinian team, with the guidance of their adviser, Philip Virgil B. Astillo, Ph.D., bested 35 other teams from more than 12 universities in the Visayas Region. Their work, “USC Project Taytayan” web application, showcased their technical proficiency and ability to handle challenging situations.

According to its official website, Solve: Solution Challenge Visayas “invites students across Visayas to build technology that addresses the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

The three-month hackathon allows participating students to “collaborate with peers, get expert guidance, and showcase their skills to create positive change.”
