Interior Designer Dr. Adrian P. del Monte, Dean of the University of San Carlos School of Architecture, Fine Arts, and Design (USC SAFAD), was named the Interior Design Honoree in the Professional Category at the 2026 Haligi ng Dangal Awards for his design of the Isla Cabana Resort in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

Dr. del Monte received the distinction on October 3, 2026 at the Costa Palawan Resort in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. Bestowed by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Dean Adrian’s Haligi ng Dangal citation of merit stands as a prestigious mark of his excellence in designing spaces that blend Filipino culture, heritage, and modern innovation.
The feature photos below highlight this harmony in action, showing how the unique soul of Surigao del Norte is seamlessly brought into contemporary resort interiors.

From its welcoming lobby and full-service restaurant to its private cabanas and beachfront villas, Dr. del Monte thoughtfully weaves local culture into every corner of the property.
At its core, this award-winning concept proves that the traditional bahay kubo can be elevated to complement the progressive, global lifestyle thriving in Siargao Island. A defining element of Dean del Monte’s approach is his intentional use of local materials—incorporating thatch, slates, and carefully curated reclaimed ironwood (locally known as magkuno), which was personally provided by the resort owner.
Beyond its aesthetic beauty, Dr. del Monte’s work stands as a testament to the power of Filipino native design, proving it can hold its own on the international stage.
What makes this achievement even sweeter is that it marks the second consecutive award cycle where Carolinians have been honored for design excellence following IDr. Sheryl Germino-Marinas’ recognition in 2024.
