Overview
The Department of Political Science was established on December 10, 1970 under what was then the College of Liberal Arts. From the 1990s to 2010, the Department solidified its pre-law orientation under the College of Arts and Sciences. At present, the Department is a leading social science program under the School of Law and Governance.
The curricular evolution of the Department has been filled with breakthroughs that catered to the evolving needs of the community. In 2004, the Department offered a non-thesis Master in Political Science program. In 2008, the Department paved the way for a 10-month intensive, non-thesis, and ladderized Master in Public Management and Development program. The following year, the Department was one of the first in the Philippines to institutionalize a tracking system for its Bachelor of Arts in Political Science program. It allowed students to specialize in Political Theory and Systems, Public Management and Development, International Relations and Foreign Service, and Law and Policy Studies.
In 2014, the Department transitioned its non-thesis graduate programs into academic-track and thesis programs, i.e., Master of Arts in Political Science and Master of Arts in Public Management and Development. In 2018, the Department revitalized its undergraduate Bachelor of Arts in Political Science program with specialization options for students upon reaching their third year. Students can now choose between two majors, i.e., in Law and Policy Studies and in International Relations and Foreign Service.
Today, the Department adopts an outcomes-based and competency-based lifelong learning framework. Students shall have the thinking, attitudinal, and behavioral competencies with ethical and humanist orientation. Students shall also have the confidence in utilizing and applying the knowledge of the various frameworks of Political Science in their professional life.
The Department is guided by its institutional graduate outcome, i.e., A Carolinian Political Science graduate is an evidence-based lifelong learner steering governance.
