Atty. Marlouize E. Villanueva, a faculty member of the USC College of Law, has been selected by the ANU Philippines Institute to undertake a two-month visiting fellowship at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, Australia.
As a visiting fellow, Atty. Villanueva will be given the opportunity to undertake research from August 19 until October 19, 2024.
Visiting Fellowships are awarded to outstanding academics based in the Philippines. As one of USC Law’s professors, Atty. Villanueva has spearheaded various research activities in line with his research interests which include legal theory, political law, local governance, and corporate social responsibility in extractive industries.
Together with his Philosophy in Law class, Atty. Villanueva organized an academic forum, “Jurisprudence on Trial: Unveiling Philosophy in Law Practice” on November 25, 2023. The event featured Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Marvic Leonen who delivered a talk on “Artificial Intelligence and the Practice of Law.”
He also organized the first-ever law research congress in the University of San Carlos on May 11, 2024 which focused on the theme, “Law and Sustainable Development Goals.”
Atty. Villanueva earned his law degree from USC and he finished his Master of Laws (Ll.M.) at the University of the Philippines College of Law in 2023. Currently, he is the editor-in-chief of Virtus: The USC Law Journal.
His participation in the Australia-based fellowship will be instrumental in helping USC Law remain as one of the best law schools in the Philippines and even become a powerhouse for research and innovation in the field of law.
“In doing so, USC will not only produce conscientious lawyers but also competent researchers capable of dissecting the intricacies of law and its operation within society,” he shared.
