Dr. Felix A. Buot, a DOST long-term Balik Scientist awardee who spent his two-year visit working at the USC Department of Physics, delivered an exit seminar at 9:30 a.m. today, September 13, 2019, at the Virtual Training Room of the Josef Baumgartner Learning Resource Center.

Dr. Buot, until recently, is a Professor at the Center of Computational Materials Science of George Mason University in Washington, D.C., and was previously a Research Physicist at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. He is working in collaboration with the Theoretical, Computational Science, Engineering Group at USC headed by Dr. Roland Emerito S. Otadoy.

Sticking to script, Dr. Buot presented his accomplishments during his tenure as Balik Scientist at USC, initially as short-term visits since 2010 then this current two-year stint. He highlighted a seminal paper on “multi-spinor non-equilibrium quantum transport equations that can simply explain all known experiments on new topological materials.”

Dr. Buot and Dr. Otadoy also established a Laboratory for Computational Functional Materials, Nanoscience, and Nanotechnology, with the intention to acquire grants from industry and attract first-rate research staff. Incidentally, the Department of Physics will host another Balik Scientist, Dr. Ryan Arevalo, who will work on the interface of physics and chemistry.

Buot was given a certification and a Balik Scientist pin for completing his stint at USC. Present during the seminar was Engr. Edilberto Paradela, Regional Director of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office VII, who encouraged participants “to continue to work together and collaborate.” Glenda Sacbibit, from the DOST Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Technology (PCIEERD), highlighted the country’s efforts on attracting Filipino scientists based overseas to return and related success stories that revived programs and institutions because of the Balik Scientist Program. Engr. Luis Cabatingan, Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering, was also presented since PCIEERD held an orientation meeting for the hosting of Balik Scientists. The Department of Chemical Engineering will host Balik Scientist Dr. Noel Peter Tan.
