Dr. Katrina Jhoanne M. Santos, a graduate of Science Education major in Physics and a faculty of the USC Department of Teacher Education received the Best Ph.D. Paper Award in the Technical Oral Presentation during the 10th National Research Conference in Science and Mathematics Education (NRCSME), on November 21–22, 2024, at SMX Convention Center, Clark, Angeles, Angeles City, Pampanga.
Santos’ Ph.D. paper, “Development and Validation of a Teacher Development Program for Junior High School Teachers on Teaching Science Using Socioscientific Issues” competed and won under the Teaching Capacity and Development category. Richard R. Jugar, Ph.D., a faculty member of the School of Education and the Director of the Educational Practices, Instruction & Curriculum (EPIC) Development Office, was her adviser.
The research conference, which was organized by the Department of Science and Technology–Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) and in collaboration with the National Consortium in Graduate Science and Mathematics Education (NCGSME), provided a platform for the Capacity Building Program in Science and Mathematics Education (CBPSME) and Science and Technology Regional Alliance of Universities for National Development (STRAND) scholars to present their theses and dissertations.
A total of 350 graduate scholars and guests from 16-member universities engaged in discussions to foster scholarly exchange and explore opportunities for collaboration to advance STEM education in the Philippines.
This year, the conference was hosted by Central Luzon State University (CLSU), with Saint Mary’s University (SMU), and Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) serving as co-hosts. The conference was centered on the theme, “Synergies in STEM: Fostering Cultural Integration, Collaboration, and Innovation for Sustainable Futures.”
