The University of San Carlos team composed of Jezreel Tan, Kenje Hofileña, and Woohyun Park, all 5th year B.S. Computer Engineering students, bagged 1st place and was named champion of the Cebu Schools Athletic Federation, Inc. (CESAFI) Robotics Competition (College Level) held last March 11, 2020 at the Cebu Institute of Technology-University.

Dubbed as the “Sumobot” competition, USC bested other teams from host Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CITU), University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR), and University of Cebu (UC)-Banilad Campus. The objective of the competition is to push the opponent robot out of the “dohyo” (arena) using brute strength or clever strategies or a combination of both, hence the tagline.

The USC-A team dropped only one round on the way to the championship. In the final match, USC-A defeated CITU-B with a score of 2-0. Meanwhile, USC-B composed of 2nd year B.S. Computer Engineering students Jhana Poticar and Mary Jane Rajmohan mentored by 5th year student Christopher Ivan Pamonag placed 5th out of eight participants. Both teams were coached by Department of Computer Engineering professors Engr. Van B. Patiluna assisted by Dr. Luis Gerardo S. Cañete Jr.

The event was the debut of team USC in the collegiate robotics competition. It also caps a successful academic year for the Department of Computer Engineering, which won 2nd place in the ICpEP “Sumobot” Challenge, and 1st and 3rd places in the VEX Robotics Competition in September 2019.
